Description: The Placitas Community Library (PCL) has been an integral part of the annual Placitas Garden Tour (PGT) since 2016. With an award-winning xeric landscape maintained by Sandoval Extension Master Gardeners, library and community volunteers, this is a perfect setting for horticultural related activities. Recent garden certifications include the ABQ Backyard Refuge “Connecting Habitat” garden in 2024, a USDA “People’s Choice” garden in 2022, and a “National Wildlife Federation” garden in 2011.
Touring the PCL landscape is self-sguided this year. Library volunteers can introduce you to their online plant data base, so you can learn to grow the same low-water and pollinator friendly plants. The PCL is in its second year of a seed library program. You must apply at the front desk to access a repurposed card catalog containing the seeds.
The completed works of art from the six garden tour artists will be on display for sale in the Gracie Lee Community Room. Ticketed tour guests can sign up for a free PGT sponsored gift basket raffle in the gallery.
A library book sale open to the public will take place on the tour date, and a family activity table will be available to make native seed balls. The library’s labyrinth is a fun place to explore for children of all ages.
The Albuquerque Bonsai Club members will be demonstrating the ancient art of bonsai on trees throughout the day at the library. Bonsai translates in Japanese to “planted in a container” but there is much more involved than planting a tree in a pot. The club was established in 1975with a mission to established in 1975 with a mission to create a community for bonsai enthusiasts to share knowledge and experiences.
The Jardineros de Placitas is celebrating its 60th Jubilee anniversary, and representatives will highlight their special interest clubs, benevolence and community service programs. They will be giving out designer bookmarks to show their partnership with PGT at the library. Their Plant Whisperers who are volunteering at all garden tour locations will be handing out seed ball packets to guests.
