Description: Scott and Nancy moved to Placitas over a decade ago from the city of Chicago, where they maximized their urban growing space by creating a roof top vegetable garden. They purchased a lot of land on Camino Lucero just south of the Village of Placitas in 2007. While waiting for their home to be built, Scott started manually clearing a small farming area just north of their home site.
At that time the area consisted of several one seeded juniper trees and a couple of unattended fruit trees. Scott gradually removed encroaching junipers and planted other fruit trees to create a small orchard. Water was sourced from their own well. Over the past years Scott has built enclosures and raised beds of different sizes to grow a variety of vegetables. Scott amends native granite soil yearly with locally sourced horse manure and employs organic farming practices and crop rotation in growing large amounts of vegetables and fruits. The produce is used by the owners in their cooking, sold to Blades Bistro in Placitas, and sold at the weekly Bernalillo farmers market located at Rotary Park in the summer months. Scott and Nancy, an avid swimmer, use their glass enclosed swimming pool as a winter green house for various plants and tomato seedlings.
Different vegetable growing structures and techniques will be on display at this garden. You will get to talk to other garden vegetable growing experts along with Scott and Nancy, who will be selling vegetables harvested from their garden on the day of the tour.
